Flashback to the Launch Shades of Beauty LIVE 2018

Shades of Beauty LIVE 2018 was mindblowing, exhilarating, whirlwind, for a first event. The beauty event of the year produced by women of colour for women of colour showcased an exhibition of brands displaying their amazing products and giving you the chance to try first hand.

Exhibition floor

At the Shades of Beauty LIVE exhibition space, some of the brands were owned by black women and men who started their businesses when they discovered a gap in the market.

These brands were there to display their products for attendees to try and were also given the option to purchase, giving attendees a chance to support the independent black marketplace in the UK.

Many of the brands were UK based business however a few business owners also flew over from the USA for the show.

One of them was the Hollywood Makeup artist Jacque Mgido from Jacque Mgido cosmetics who had come over straight from the USA to introduce her brand to the UK BAME community and showcased the range of looks that can be achieved using her products.

She also carried out a makeup workshop masterclass on the Shades of Beauty LIVE show floor, which had many of the attendees asking questions and also wanting more.

The Shades of Beauty LIVE volunteers were outstanding supporters of the show on both days and created an amazing atmosphere and experience for the attendees. The volunteers gave up their time and expertise at the show and many gained a lot from volunteering.

A number of stands were styling corners, where attendees can have their hair styled, makeup made over, and nails done on the show floor. Shades of Beauty LIVE also had a masseuse who pampered some attendees.

Some attendees came on their own and others with their mums and friends, but everyone found something that they can relate to.

Talks and Workshops

The Shades of Beauty LIVE talks instigated conversations that you would not normally have elsewhere were intriguing.

They were passionate and truly explored some of the myths and legends of beauty for the Black, Asian and minority groups in the UK.

Covering hosts of subjects from beauty in religion, self-empowerment, relationships and misogyny over the two days show.

The attendees were entertaining listening to the speakers and what they had to say on the subject matter.

The celebrity hairstylist Kevin Shanti gave an eye-popping rainbow wig workshop on the Instagram influencer Mariam Musa, who had appreciated the new look as she went to the Notting Hill carnival the following day to show it off.

The wig colour was amazing against her skin and sure get the creative juices going on all who were at the workshop.

A number of workshops were carried out throughout over the two days, ranging from makeup masterclasses from makeup artists and business owners to hair stylists. hair product brands and also brands for skin care.

Each workshop and masterclass gave a full-on demonstration and opened the floor to discussion on their product.

Children were welcome to attend the show, and many found the exposure to the positive images and role models of BAME women and men a welcome to regular daily life.

Shades of Beauty LIVE attendees who were also parents also discussed the importance of their children attending exhibitions with a positive mindset from people of colour.

The launch of Shades of Beauty LIVE 2018 was exciting and we are so looking forward to making the 2019 show even better.
